Dixon Takes Indy, Looks for Second Richmond Win, June 28
After experiencing the disappointment of having his second IndyCar Series championship ripped from his grasp on the final lap of the 2007 season-ending race, Scott Dixon came full circle May 25, reaching the pinnacle of American open-wheel racing by winning the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500. Dixon, who finished second in last season’s “Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” will now set his sights on claiming his second win at Richmond International Raceway in the SunTrust Indy Challenge on June 28. Tickets for Richmond International Raceway are available by clicking here or calling 866-455-RACE. Dixon, who dominated the time trials and practice during the May lead-up to the Indy 500, won from the pole Sunday to earn his first Indy 500 title. He last won at America’s Premier Short Track in 2003 en route to the season’s IndyCar Series championship. While Dixon’s victory on Sunday probably came as no surprise, there certainly wasn’t a lack of drama or excitement at the famous 2 ½-mile oval. From the controversial pass by Marco Andretti on his teammate Tony Kanaan, which led to Kanaan’s race-ending crash, to the late pit road contact made by Ryan Briscoe on Danica Patrick, the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500 was exciting from start to finish. After the hype following the unification of the two major open-wheel series in North America earlier this year, fans can look forward to Dixon, Patrick, Kanaan, Andretti and the rest of the IndyCar Series stars like Helio Castroneves, Graham Rahal and Buddy Rice, bringing the same open-wheel racing excitement to Richmond International Raceway’s ¾-mile oval, the shortest track on the Indy Car Series schedule, on June 28 at the eighth annual SunTrust Indy Challenge “under the lights.” Patrick, who earned her first career victory in April with a win in the Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi, went storming down pit road after Briscoe, following the incident that ended her shot at victory at the Indianapolis 500. Patrick has made three career starts at Richmond International Raceway with a best finish of sixth in last year’s SunTrust Indy Challenge. Castroneves is also a former winner at America’s Premier Short Track, having won in 2005, then celebrating with his signature climb up the fence at the start-finish line. The SunTrust Indy Challenge is the main event of an exciting open-wheel racing weekend at Richmond International Raceway. The weekend starts Friday, June 27 with NBC12 Day, which includes SunTrust Indy Challenge Pole Qualifying and the “Showdown at Sundown” USAC National Sprint Car Series race. In addition to the SunTrust Indy Challenge, the James River Grounds 100 USAC Silver Crown Series race takes place on Saturday. Tickets are general admission for Friday’s NBC12 Day at a cost of $15 and include Pole Qualifying for the SunTrust Indy Challenge and the “Showdown at Sundown” USAC Sprint Car Series race. In addition, Friday’s ticket includes an autograph session with all the IndyCar Series drivers. Reserved tickets for Saturday’s James River Grounds 100 USAC Silver Crown Series race and SunTrust Indy Challenge IndyCar Series race, are $35, and Saturday general admission tickets are $30. On both Friday and Saturday, children 12 and under are admitted free with a general admission ticketed adult. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here or calling 866-455-RACE.
